I Like Fall…..Fashion!

October 29th, 2016

I can’t say Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I know I may be out of the norm as many often love this time of the year. People often enjoy the crispness of the cooler air and yes of course the leaves of the deciduous tress changing into the vibrant shades of red, orange and yellows; I can admit it’s beautiful until they being to fall. However, for me fall is mainly wet and gloomy reminder that (in ‘Game of Thrones’ fashion) “winter is coming”.

There is one thing that gets me through this gray season and that of course is the great fall fashions.  Fall is one of the best fashion seasons hands down.  The mixing of the rich deep colours, the fabulous fall coats and leather jackets, the trendy boots and closed toe shoes.  Sweater and sweater dresses, funky print tights, box pleat skits and of course the accessories; scarves and hat.

As a stylist and true fashionistas I love to have fun mixing up and layering fall pieces. Standing in front on my closet putting together a stylish combo does give me a bit of pleasure amongst the gloom.  I do try to fully embrace that brief moment in the time when it’s not yet too cold or too wet in which I can wear my peep toe booties before I have to trade them in for my rain boots and winter mocs. Where my light wool trench and my little leather jackets paired with a scarf is enough to keep me warm, leaving the parka in the back of the closet a little while longer.

With trying to take the glass half full approach, I guess I do like fall?!

Oh Dior!

April 19th, 2016

I would be lying if I say I am not truly missing Galliano at Dior right now. Although I may not have always agreed with all of Galliano’s design choices (or his crazy comments), every Fall and Spring I anticipated a collection that often let me thinking and wanting more.  I was rarely left disappointed after watching a Dior runway show unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for the Fall 2016/17 Ready-To- Wear collection that left me severely underwhelmed .

Christian Dior RTW Fall 2016

Christian Dior RTW Fall 2016

With the departure of the recent Dior head designer Raf Simons, studio directors Serge Ruffieux and Lucie Meier took on the task of creating a Fall 2016/17 collection.  It’s said that the inspiration behind this collection was bold black lines and white sheets of paper. Maybe it’s to signify a new start, a new take of the house, or a new chapter in the Dior book being written.  Sure, there were a few cute coats and superb lineup of fab shoes but the “meat” of the collection was in my opinion lacking in style, creativity and cohesiveness.  No double take worthy pieces here.

Dior FA2016

This collection was good enough to keep the house stable as they figure out the direction they would like to go.  Whether that is bringing on a new famous designer to head up the house or giving the lead to someone within the design team already.  Who ever is next to take the helm, I hope they will have the vision to rebuilding a strong identity for Dior again.

Oscar 2016 Red Carpet

March 7th, 2016

A week ago today millions of us were glued to the TV watching Hollywood walk the red carpet at the 88th Academy Awards, mostly commonly referred to as the Oscars.  Oscar night is arguably the biggest night of the season in the acting world therefore, Hollywood stars tends to bring their fashion “A” game saving their best look for this huge night well maybe not all of them.

Let’s take a look at KYC’s choices or best and worst dressed at the 2016 Oscar’s.

2016 Oscar Worst Dressed

Where did the Kate on the SAG red carpet go?  How quickly we go from the top right down to the bottom.  I don’t think any of us was really expecting Kate to step out on the red carpet in this underwhelming strapless black Ralph Lauren gown with a train. It wasn’t the styling of her hair, make-up or accessories, that all looked great.  It wasn’t even the overall style of the dress as it was very basic. But it was the horrific fabric choice that this dress was made in that won Kate a place on our worst dress list.  The extreme sheen of this dress was too much, kinda reminiscent of a slimy black leech fresh out the water.

Kate Winslet Oscar 2016

Yes we know that British Costume Designer Sandy Powell has a quirky personal style and that suits her. However we felt the print on this vintage inspired suit was too overwhelming for the red carpet.

Oh Heidi, here we go again.  I don’t think there is much anyone can say about Heidi Klum in this 50 shades of lavender Marchesa gown.  It’s the one sleeve and the foo foo flowers that take it way over the top to ugly.  Joe Zoe was asked on I believe on ET on how this look could go from a miss to a hit and he nailed it.  His thoughts were to remove the sleeve and both flowers and add a gorgeous broach on the shoulder.  There really is no excuse for this fashion behavior from supermodel and project runway creator and judge Heidi Klum.

2016 Oscar Best Dressed

We had high expectations for Alicia Vikander and she did not disappoint in this yellow custom Louis Vuitton gown. Many compared her look to Disney’s Princess Belle of “The Beauty and the Beast” and she definitely was the belle of the 8th Oscar Ball.

Quantico star Priyanka Chopra was an elegant vision in her stunning lace appliqué white Zuhair Murad gown.  I have always loved how white looks on a woman of colour. Overall it has been a look we have seen before but she made it look fresh and new.

Chrissy Teigen can teach a class on how to be pregnant and still rock the Red Carpet. Hair and make- up was on point, having the soon to be mom glowing and looking fresh.  Although there were a couple snags  that caused some on the spot alteration while Chrissy was in the gown, she didn’t let that phase her as she still looked fierce in her red beaded and embroidered Marchesa gown.

Charlize Theron and Lady Gaga always know how to bring drama to the red carpet in different but both great ways.

Charlize Theron made a statement in this true red, plunging neckline Dior gown.  The dress drapped over her body perfectly it just looked like effortless beauty.  The long diamond studded pendant necklace by Harry Winston was a bold choice that we are glad was made.  Charlize is so confident in her ‘sexy’ and if anyone was going to take on this daring plug we are glad it was Charlize.

Lady Gaga was a fashion lovers dream.  It was dramatic, it was artistic, it was different, it was outside of the box and it was wearable fashion. The mastermind designer was Lady Gaga’s former stylist and friend Brandon Maxwell. It was one of the best pant ensembles to grace the red carpet.

A look Back:Oscar Night Count Down.

February 20th, 2016

Over the past few weeks the hot topic in the award world has been the controversy surrounding African Americans not being acknowledged by nominations of their contribution and talents in the filming industry.  With the Oscars quickly approaching, a few weeks ago Jada Pickett Smith spoke out and suggested that African Americans within the film industry to take a stand and to send a message to the Academy by boycotting the Oscar’s.  Despite all the drama and whether you are for or against, as a true fashionista there is no way you will be boycotting the Red Carpet come Oscar night.

With only a week away, let’s take a little look back at where the Red Carpet fashion has been so far this year with KYC’s Best and Worst of the 2016 Golden Globes and SAG.  Whose stellar track record thus far has got us anticipating ‘fabulousness’, and who may be repeat offenders.

2016 Golden Globes Worst Dressed

worst golden-globes-2016_Fotor_Collage.jpg

Viola Davis, America Ferrera, Natalie Dormer and Bryce Dallas top my 2016 Golden Globes worst dressed list. Each look was a great choice of colour however that just wasn’t enough to save it. Viola Davis (wearing Marchesa) and Bryce Dallas (who expressed her gown shopping adventures on her own) both looked as though they just came off set of Downton Abby.  Yes, looking regal and like old money can nowadays often looks vintage and chic however the style of these two gowns drastically aged both ladies. These dresses are probably more suited for Isabell and Violent Crawley.

What to say about America Ferrera in Jenny Packham and Natalie Dormer in J Mendel.  The designs of these gown were just not flattering on either of these ladies.  Eliminate the deep keyhole neckline and then all we would be looking at is a prom dress that wasn’t quite altered to perfection.  These ladies did not win prom Queen with these looks.

2016 Golden Globes Best Dressed

J-Lo was slaying it in her yellow caped Gianbattista Valli Haute Couture gown accessorized with Harry Winston diamonds, dazzling shoes and clutch to match.

Jaimie Alexandre, radiant in Genny’s black and emerald green, geometric print, deep plunging neckline gown.  The emerald (dress and jewelry) was perfect against her skin and the choice of the up do to keep her neck looking long and open was the right decision.

Alicia Vikander was glowing in her white Louis Vuitton.  With the colour and the ruffles around the neckline, framing her face, the dress felt light, soft, angelic and chic.  Although it was a simple silhouette is was the details such as the shimming piping, the crossing straps on the back is what separated it from all the other pretty white dresses on that night.

3 ladies with 3 completely different looks perfectly styled from head to toe to portray 3 distinctly different fashion personalities yet all owning their personal style.

2016 SAG Awards Worst Dressed

Worst Sag_Fotor_Collage_Fotor_Collage.jpg

The past few year Nicole Kidman has been up on top in my books at least when it came to her red carpet ensembles however, Nicole missed the mark this time around.  Some loved her custom made Gucci gown, but with the combination of the colours, the shimmer and all the frills it was a little too circus clown for my liking.

Eva Longoria’s fit petite body often looks amazing in everything she puts on but, lacy Julien MacDonald number wasn’t quiet the right fit. Colour looked great on her skin, the lacy fabric and sexy backless detail was great still the portions were not right.  It looked as though she was wearing a sketched out knit sweater that was no longer hitting the body at the right places.

Oh Brie Larson, there was so much about this powder blue Versace gown that we wanted to love.  So many cute little elements; twisted straps, loops, knots, ruching etc. but that was the problem, too many elements. All the little details didn’t work well together and instead made the dress looked over designed and confusing.  Still have a hard time understanding the one red suspender back strap?!

2016 SAG Awards Best Dressed

Apart from Kate Winslet’s looking fabulous (hard to believe she didn’t check herself out before the event)  in her dark green Armani gown with capped sleeves and a deep V neckline, black stole the night.  3 of 4 of my best dress choices were show stopping, red carpet worthy black gowns.

Best SAG_Fotor_Collage_Fotor_Collage.jpg

Ariel Winter showed us she is no child in this sexy open back full lace mermaid gown by Romona Kebeza.  There were some talks about the cut of the gown showed her scares from her recent breast reduction but, Ariel was clear in saying she was not ashamed as they are a part of who she is. With Ariel all grown up I can’t wait to see where her style story takes her.  But if this is any indication of things to come I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.

Elie Saab always creates incredible evening gowns and this black sheer beaded gown Rachel McAdams wore on SAG night was no exception.

But Jessica Pare, was all the way YES! This was by far my Favorite look that night.  From hair, to make-up to shoes, Jessica was styled to perfection. The black cut out KaufmanFranco gown with the silver neck detail was on a different level.  It was striking, it was sexy, it was classy and it was fashion.  If you did not do a double take as Jessica took to the red carpet then we were not watching the same red carpet.

Oscar Night Red Carpet Watch List

Jaimie Alexandra and Alicia Vikander will definitely be on KYC’s watch list at the Oscar’s. We have been seeing nothing but great style from these ladies lately.  As always Jennifer Lawrence never fails to deliver, can’t wait to see what Dior gown she will be rocking that night.  And if Emma Stone makes the event that evening Emma Stone with her fashion track record the past year or so we are expecting to see nothing but great fresh and trendy looks.

Super Chic

November 9th, 2015

After a long 2+ years of searching it finally paid off.  I have been looking for the prefect jeans shirt that embodied my sense of style and earlier this fall my search finally came to an end.  Jeans shirts have really made a hot come back the last few years. With the multitude of design, cuts and shades (despite my pickiness) there really is a lot to choose from that would suit just about anyone’s style.

Because of its versatility, a jeans shirt is a great piece to have in your closet.  It can be taken from Fall into Summer and from the office (experiment with your favorite blazer) into an evening out.  Jean shirts are no longer just your casual weekend wear, now our stylist eyes has been open to several way of bringing a level of modernized and chicness to this piece.

Like neutrals, jeans go with everything but there are a few colours that can really take this casual weekend basic to a top level of style. Colours such as Black, White, Red, Burgundy and Mustard Yellow are some of the best pairings. But if you are really feeling your daring fashionista side coming out try fuchsia or pairing your shirt with a classic leopard print.

Just In Time For The Emmy’s

September 27th, 2015

It’s time to get back to it.  I’ve had to step away from the keyboard for a little while; ok it’s been almost a year.  As shameful as that is, it was a much needed break but I am excited to get back to doing what I love, talking about fashion!

So let me get right to it.

I can’t think of a better way to start blogging again than to talk about last week’s red-carpet fashions.  The Emmy’s was a great kick-off to award season, a great way to usher in the fall line-up of new and returning TV shows and of course a great way to say good-bye to summer and, make way for Fall 2015.

We all know there were some great looks and some bad looks at the Emmy’s.  That’s a given at any award show. So let me just by pass the good and bad and get right to the best and worst.

The award for absolutely worst dress of the night goes to Heidi Klum.  I am not going to try and sugar coat it by finding a nice way to describe this atrocity but I am going to be as clear and concise with my words.  This dress was UGLY!  Yes that is right, it was ugly!

Heidi Klum Emmy 15

Reasons began to run through my head trying to make sense of how Heidi ended up in this dress.  I mean it couldn’t have been by choice, right?! First thought, dress must be a competition win from a contestant on “Project Runway” who obviously shouldn’t have won.  Second thought, clearly a homemade project that she worked on with her kids, Big Bird attacking your right side was their inspiration?  But as I was working on my third explanation the name “Versace” was uttered from Heidi’s mouth.  Completely shocked but I guess we all miss the mark sometimes.  A mix mash of design elements that just didn’t work no matter how you styled it.

Audrey Plaza mastered the art of minimalism on Emmy night.  Keeping it simple with styling allowing her simple and classy deep V, high slit, black Alexandre Vauthier dress to speak for itself.

Although Audrey was a top contender for my number 1 spot, an unsuspecting beauty came to the ball.  Often making my worst dress list but shockingly claiming and deserving the best dress award this year is Lady Gaga.  Gaga gave us all types of Hollywood Sophistication from head to toe.  Her fashion statement began as she step out of what I believe was a white Bentley.  Make-up was neutral, soft and subtle with the perfect light coral lip work well with her complexion.  Hair colour was the right shade of blonde and styled nicely into a sophisticated bob.  Because her gorgeous black, one shoulder Brandon Maxwell gown was everything right (silhouette, structure, and stylistic details) there was no need for over the top accessories.  Diamond studs were more than enough.  My favorite detail about the dress was the deep V like cut under the arm.  It was sexy and feminine detail that allowed for her to show some of her tattoos off without being tacky.

I felt like Lady Gaga embodied 2 major style Icon that night.  It was a definite Marilyn Monroe meets Grace Kelly moment.  Well Done Gaga!

New Year New Dress

December 23nd, 2014

New Years is quickly approaching and like most ladies I have become a custom to ringing in the New Year in a new fabulous frock.  I strongly believe you should start the year the same way you want to end it and I always want to start my year looking great.

Holiday promotions are running rampant in stores and online right now  I would be silly to not take advantage of some of these deals to pull my New Year’s look together.

I haven’t quite had any luck finding the style of dress I had envisioned for that night in stores yet but I have come across a few great options online.  Stay tuned for a post on my final New Years look.

All I Want For Christmas

December 13th, 2014

With Christmas only a couple weeks away I’m sure we all have a few things on our wishlist that we are really hoping is underneath the Christmas tree waiting for us.  At the top of my wishlist?…A chic, trendy black leather jacket.

No one can deny that there is something about black leather that always gives off a sense of “cool”.  Once on some of us tend to feel we belong with the “cool kids” in the movie ‘Greece’ .  Now there really isn’t anything overly new about the concept as its been a staple in Hollywood for decades.

leather jacket post3_Fotor_Collage

However, my desire for a black leather jacket is not due to how great Kim Kardashian or Rihanna may look in theirs but in fact is attributed to it’s amazing versatility.  A leather jacket looks great with every outfit transforming a look to cool and edgy.  It easily goes from day to night; from causal, to business and even formal wear.

I have always felt that a leather jacket is a style investment.  A great leather jacket usually isn’t cheap so it is worth taking the time to find the right style, as it may become that timeless piece in your closet.

It’s Always Hard to say Goodbye

October 26th, 2014

The morning of Tuesday, October 21st, 2014 will forever be etched in my brain.  It was the day that I along with the rest of the fashion world found out we had lost another fashion legend.  On October 20th, 2014 the renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta passed away, losing his battled to cancer (diagnosed in 2006).  Oscar has been one of my all time favorite designers since I could remember.  The first designers name I actually could remember at a very young age.  He drew me in with his beautiful Haute Coutour, Bridal and RTW collections season by season.  What he articulated in his fashion, was so clear to me that when his collections walked down the runway I always knew it was his show as the first piece would turned the corner.  That is a mark of a talented designer.

This Dominican born designer moved to Madrid at age 18 to study paintings to become a painter but he was quickly bitten by the fashion bug which lead him to his true calling as a fashion designer.  Oscar had a profound understand of femininity in fashion.  He played to his strengthen making pieces that celebrated the feminine soft beauty of a women yet somehow never down playing her strength but instead showing that her beauty is in part attributed to that strength.  You have to be a confident woman to really bring forth the true intentions of Oscar’s designs.  I credit some of that quality in his style to his some of his training in Spain, as his design often had remnants of Spanish culture.  His designs were flattering and flirty and strong.

oscar dress_Fotor_Collage

Oscar de la Renta’s talent was undeniable from the beginning.  Quickly becoming a highly sought after designer he dressed socialites to First Ladies (such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton), to Hollywood stars (such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Oprah Winfrey)  and continued to do so for decades.  From the start of his career there has probably never been a time that you didn’t hear the name of Oscar de la Renta on the red carpet as celebrities are asked the  famous question “who are you wearing?”  From start to finish Oscar’s long standing successful career has been an inspiration to many.  Although I may now never fulfill my dream of one day personally meeting this fashion icon, he has been highly influential in my life.  He has helped to inspire my love of fashion and  has influenced my concept of what fashion is. He helped to shape my aesthetic within my own journey in fashion design and styling.

The loss of this fashion genius has hit me a lot harder than I thought it would. I will miss seeing his brilliance expressed in his designs as his art walked down the runway show after show.  RIP Oscar de la Renta.  You are a true fashion icon and your influence on the fashion world will never be forgotten. We will miss you true gentlemanly presence and your joyous smile pop up on the runway after every show.
